Are your Brakes Ok?

Brake Pads 8 Comments »

A brake dust shield or sometimes called brake dust cover is actually aluminum plates that is custom molded to specific vehicle brake system applications. It located between the rim and brake discs of your car right above the wheel. Its strategic location gives effective shielding and collection of debris. To install it, simply slide it to fit onto the wheel. As a performance and maintenance equipment, it is designed to serve as a protective cover or shield to minimize wear and tear due to daily driving. Giving huge savings on maintenance and less frequent system component replacement costs, brake dust cover makes a practical add-on that as a sleek cover that looks great for a protective gear.

VW brake dust cover extends the life of a vehicle’s brake system. But if one cannot afford to buy such Volkswagen part, a practical alternative is to check the brake system once in a while.

Brake systems are one of the most important safety features of your car. It dictates the stops of the vehicle. So it is important to keep them functioning longer with the best protection you can ever give.

If you have even partially lost your brakes in the past, you might be thinking now repairing it as durable as possible. Inspecting your brakes twice a year for wear and damage can protect you and your passengers while saving you money by catching any damage before it becomes too costly.

On many cars, of different types and brands, you can inspect the brakes without even removing the wheel. If your car has alloy wheels with spaces in the middle, you can get a proper assessment done by just peeping through the hole. Whether you can peep through your wheel or you have to take the wheel off, be sure you have a clear view of the Brake Pads and the big shiny disc.

Try to inspect the disc first. It should be shiny from the inside to the outer edge, and fairly uniform.

No need to worry if you can see slight lines in it. This is a normal wear. If there are any rough spots or pronounced grooves in the disc, however, they should probably be replaced. Brake discs should always be replaced in pairs. This is to assure that your car’s drivability and safety will not be compromised.

Now take a look at the pads. You will have to peek up to see them. But if you follow the surface of the disc to the top, you will see the outside pad touching the disc. If there is 1/8 inches or less remaining on the pad, it is time to replace them with new ones. That is about the height of two pennies stacked. No need to worry about the cost. After all, brake pads are cheap and installing them is “a no-sweat job”.

How do you change brake pads on a 1996 chevy s10 pickup truck?

How To Change Brake Pads 4 Comments »

I've already got my truck jacked up and the tires taken off. I've tried to do it myself and ive looked up videos on how to do it. But, the brakes on my truck are different so none of them helped.

If you could please tell me step by step on what to do i would be very thankful. (and if possible you can give me links or show me pictures)

thanks.

When you are changing disc brakes, you have to take off two or so bolts that hold the calipers on. There is two tricks you need to remember, one is when you pull that caliper off it will still have a brake line connected to it, don't let it hang by the brake line, use a zip tie or a piece of metal wire to suspend it while you work on it.

Also before you remove the old pads, you have to spread the brake pads apart by compressing the brake piston. If you don't do this before you slip the new pads in, the new pads will be thicker and mean that you won't be able to slip them around the rotor when you try to reassemble. Use anything you can to spread the brake pads such as a pair of beefy pliers that you stick between the pads while they are closed and pull the handles apart to spread the pads, they make a tool to do it nice and proper, but you don't have to have it.

You are also going to have a line on the rear brakes that is for the parking brake if you are wondering about that. Swapping the Brake Pads is pretty simple, there is just pads and sometimes little brackets to help guide the pads. Also look at the rotor and check to see how thick it is, if there is a lot of wear and the metal is getting thin you will have to replace it.

what's the difference in ceramic and organic brake pads?

Ceramic Brake pads 3 Comments »

I need Brake Pads and I was always wondering.

I never heard of Ceramic Brake pads I think that you are confusing them with ceramic brake discs. These I know are more reliable than metal ones, because they don't heat so much and therefore the brake pads have more traction and the braking power is superior. Hope it helps

What causes brake pads to wear out on one side faster than the other?

Brake Pads 5 Comments »

I just checked my Brake Pads and the left side looks brand new, the right side i had to replace since they were crazy worn out..

It sounds like your right caliper is seized. Either the caliper is bad or it isn't sliding on it's guides.

How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?

I need to change my 2 front Brake Pads…my friend did it a few years ago and I watched him but don't remember much of it….but I think I can change them myself I just need to know what to do…

I know you need to raise your car and take off the wheel…from there it's pretty straightforward I'm assuming.
I have socket wrenches is that all I need?

I would suggest not trying this without hands on supervision. There are many things that can go wrong and you will not know how to deal with it.
As was stated the rotors may need to be turned. If the old pads went to metal the rotors will have to be turned or replaced.
The calipers have to be collapsed before the new pads can be installed. On some vehicles the calipers can just be compressed but some have self adjusting calipers that has to be turned(screwed) in. Care must be taken so as not to damage the master cylinder.
There are a lot of times that the brakes will have to be bled. If this is not performed properly the results can be catastrophic.
I don't know how old you are but there are some things , that if messed with, can shorten a life span. This would be a particular person's business but if your brakes go out at an intersection it might involve the lady and kids you knock into on coming traffic.
